On February 15, 2013 a meteorite exploded in the atmosphere at approximately 14.5 miles above the town of Chelyabinsk, Russia. The meteorite entered Earth's atmosphere at about 41,000 mph and was 17 meters (50 ft) in diameter. The impact was so great that it drew attention to EarthScope's USArray Transportable Array stations on the east coast of North America. The National Science Foundation administered a press release on the Russian meteor. The EarthScope National Office, which is on campus at Arizona State University is pleased to be sharing a building with ASU's Center for Meteorite Studies, which is currently hosting some 200 pieces of the meteorite (about 531 grams) that are on display on campus.
